It depends on what you're doing. Water-based lube is the versatile all-rounder – safe with every toy and condom, easy to wash off. Silicone-based lasts much longer and is brilliant in water, but shouldn't touch silicone toys. Hybrids split the difference. Our lube guide walks through it all.
Water-based lube is safe with everything – every toy material and every condom. The two combinations to avoid: silicone lubricant on silicone toys (it slowly degrades the surface), and oil-based products with latex condoms (oil weakens latex and can cause breakage). When you're not sure what a toy is made of, water-based is always the right answer.
It's strongly recommended. The anus doesn't self-lubricate, so anal play needs more lube, applied more often, than anything else – and anal lubricants are formulated thicker so they cushion and stay put rather than running off. Generous lube isn't just about comfort; it's what keeps anal play safe. There is no such thing as too much.
Look for water-based formulas free of glycerin, parabens, and fragrance – the usual suspects behind irritation – or go straight to the organic and natural lubricant range. If you're prone to reactions, patch-test a small amount on your inner arm first, and stop using any product that stings or itches. A good lube should be completely unnoticeable except for the glide.
